Install & first-run FAQ
Why does Windows ask for administrator approval the first time I connect?
The .msi installs the app but not the tunnel service. On your first connect the app registers the TUKTUKVPN tunnel service in one elevated step — you see a single UAC prompt, and it does not come back on later launches.
What does macOS ask me to approve?
Two things, once: the network extension (System Settings ▸ General ▸ Login Items & Extensions ▸ Network Extensions) and the VPN configuration the app adds. The app has to be in /Applications for macOS to accept the extension.
What happens on Linux after apt install?
The package installs the tuktukvpn-tunnel systemd service, enables it, and starts it right away — nothing to run by hand. Updates arrive with your normal sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade.
How do updates work?
Windows checks from within the app and asks for administrator approval only when it installs the new .msi. Linux updates through apt like any other package, Android through Google Play, and iOS and macOS through the App Store.
Do I need an account before I can connect?
Not on iPhone or iPad: you can buy a plan in the app without creating an account yourself — no sign-up, no email — and connect once the plan is active. Restore Purchases with the same Apple Account brings the plan back on another iPhone or iPad, still without signing in. On Android, Windows and Linux, sign in with your email (a one-time code, no password) and have an active plan. There is no free trial: without an active plan the app shows the purchase screen instead of connecting. See plans
Which Windows build do I need — x64 or ARM64?
x64 for a standard PC. ARM64 for Windows on ARM (Surface Pro X, Snapdragon laptops, Parallels on a Mac) — the x64 build installs there but cannot bring the tunnel up, because its Wintun driver is not emulated. The download button picks the right one where the browser can tell, and the small link under it switches.
